The Green Team
Mission Statement: Our purpose is to educate our students on the importance of recycling, conservation, and sustainable resources, as well as allow our students to participate in hands-on training for planting, growing, and cultivating local fruits, vegetables, and herbs.
Learning Links School understands the impact human beings have had on our unique planet. Americans drink 110 million gallons of water every day. Our demand for water, land, and fuel has caused a major strain on the planets limited resources. We at the Links want to make sure we are on the positive side of history. When our students are adults, we want them to be able to reflect back on their childhood and smile, because they helped preserve the awe-inspiring beauty of Earth. We want our students to guarantee that future generations will be able to live in an environment as beautiful as ours.
The Green Team has taken the initiative to transform Learning Links School into an eco-friendly campus. It is our goal to ensure that students comprehend the value of recycling, and that we instill recycling into their every day routine. The Green Team has started a recycling program in the school cafeteria that allows every student to get involved in helping our planet, and eat lunch, all at the same time. Students will learn how to translate the symbols on their lunch items and sort between paper, plastic, and aluminum recyclables. There will be three corresponding recycling boxes for all paper, plastic, and aluminum trash items. Students who are members of The Green Team will be involved in overseeing the placement of trash items in the proper waste/recycling bins, as well as making sure the recyclables are sent to the Miami-Dade Resource Recovery Facility in Hialeah Gardens.
The Green Team has also created a garden to grow and produce organic plants, and to teach our members what is included in the process of farming. The Green Team has delegated a piece of the Learning Links property to be used for growing these plants. We have already installed a micro irrigation system directly underneath the garden, and laid down a blend of fertilized soil to prepare for our harvest. We will be starting with tomato plants in the garden within the next week. To go with our tomatoes we plan on growing a variety of herbs, along with select seasonal and regional vegetables. Our goal is to have our students be in charge of growing these plants from seed to harvest.
